Secure remote access and SSH keys

What is SSH?

Secure Shell is a protocol for encrypted remote access and administration, commonly used to manage cloud servers.

What is a key pair?

A public key is installed on the server; the private key stays with you. Authentication proves possession of the private key without sending it.

How do I connect?

A typical command is: ssh -i /path/to/private-key username@server-ip. The username and key depend on the server image/provider.

How should I protect my key?

Keep it private, restrict access to the file, and never share it or commit it to source control.

What is the host-key prompt?

It helps verify the server's identity. Check the fingerprint through a trusted source before accepting it.
